☎️ If you need help today

Call 0800 006 008. It is free, it is answered 24 hours a day, and you do not need to have decided anything before you phone. You can also WhatsApp 076 675 0710 or email Helpline@responsiblegambling.org.za. The same line handles counselling and walks you through self exclusion, so one call covers both.

🛡️ What Self Exclusion Actually Means

Self exclusion is a formal, voluntary request to be barred from gambling. You apply, and licensed operators are then required to refuse you. It is not a private promise or an account setting: it is a legislated programme provided for under the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004, and once an exclusion is in force it applies to all gambling activity, not just the brand you were using.

The single most useful thing to understand is that there are two different things people call self exclusion, and only one of them actually holds.

✅ Operator level versus the national programme

  • Operator level: you email one bookmaker and ask them to close and block your account. It takes minutes and it works, but it binds that one brand. Nothing stops you opening an account with a different licensed book the same evening.
  • The national programme: a formal exclusion under the Act, administered through the National Responsible Gambling Programme and the provincial boards. This is the one that binds licensed operators generally, and it is the one worth the paperwork.

Do both. Operator level exclusion gives you an immediate barrier at the site you actually use, while the national application is processed. There is no reason to choose between them.

Self exclusion is also not a judgement about you and it is not permanent. It is a cooling off mechanism with a defined term and structured support attached, designed so that a decision made in a clear moment cannot easily be undone in a worse one. That is the whole point of the six month floor described below.

📝 How to Self Exclude, Step by Step

In terms of the legislation, anyone can apply. There is no diagnosis to obtain, no referral to get and no fee to pay. You do not have to prove anything to anybody.

Step 1: Phone the free helpline

Call 0800 006 008, free and staffed around the clock, or email Helpline@responsiblegambling.org.za. They register you for free counselling and explain the exclusion paperwork in the same conversation. Starting here is faster than starting with a regulator, because several provincial boards publish no process at all.

Step 2: Get the exclusion request form

The form can be obtained from a provincial gambling board or from any gambling operator, through its security department. That second route matters: you do not need to wait on a regulator, and any licensed venue can hand you the form. Gauteng also publishes a downloadable self exclusion form on its own website.

Step 3: Submit it

A completed request can be submitted to the Board, to a licensee, or to a court. Most people use the first two. Ask for written acknowledgement and keep it, because that document is your proof if a venue or site later fails to enforce the exclusion.

Step 4: Close the accounts you already hold

While the exclusion is processed, email every operator you have an account with and ask in writing for the account to be closed and blocked on responsible gambling grounds. Keep the replies. This is the immediate barrier, and it costs you one evening of admin.

National Responsible Gambling Programme South Africa counselling and self exclusion support

The National Responsible Gambling Programme provides the counselling that runs alongside a self exclusion order, at no cost.

📋 What You Need to Provide

The requirements are modest and are set out most clearly by the Northern Cape Gambling Board, which publishes the fullest version of the process of any regulator in the country.

📋 The checklist

  • Your full name and a completed exclusion request form.
  • A copy of your ID or passport.
  • Contact details, including a telephone number.
  • A digital photograph. This is the part people are surprised by, and it is the practical one: the photo is what lets venue staff recognise and turn away an excluded person at the door.

Nothing else is required. No medical report, no bank statements, no explanation of why. If someone asks you for more than the above, ask which regulation they are relying on.

🔒 What Happens Once You Are Excluded

An excluded person may not take part in any gambling activity for the duration of the order. Licensed operators are expected to check and to refuse service, and counselling is offered through the National Responsible Gambling Programme throughout the period.

🔒 The three things that change

  • Venues and sites are meant to turn you away. That is what the photograph and the register are for.
  • Counselling becomes available at no cost, for the whole exclusion period, through the NRGP.
  • The clock starts. The order has to run its full term before anyone will consider lifting it.

Compliance is partly on you. The regulators are explicit that an excluded person is responsible for observing the terms of their own exclusion. Enforcement is a backstop, not a guarantee, and it works best against physical venues.

🚫 Breaching an exclusion has consequences

Attempting to gamble while excluded can mean being refused entry, and the Northern Cape states plainly that it can also result in a trespassing charge. It is worth knowing before you test it, though the more useful framing is that the barrier is there because you asked for it.

⏳ How an Exclusion Ends

This is the part of the programme that is deliberately, usefully hard, and it is the strongest argument for using the statutory route rather than a private arrangement with an operator.

⏳ Two conditions, both required

  • The order must have been in force for six months. Not six months since you applied to end it. Six months of the exclusion actually running.
  • You must prove you attended counselling. Specifically, sessions with a treatment professional. A request without that proof is not considered.

Why this is a feature, not an obstacle: an exclusion you could cancel on a bad Friday night would protect nobody. The six month floor and the counselling requirement mean the decision to return has to survive both time and a conversation with a professional. An operator level block, by contrast, can usually be reversed with one email.

An exclusion does not lift itself automatically at the six month mark either. It runs until an upliftment request is made and considered, so if you do nothing, nothing changes.

🗺️ What Each Regulator Actually Publishes

We read all nine South African gambling regulator websites on 28 July 2026 to see which of them publish a self exclusion process. The result is uneven, and it explains why so many people conclude that self exclusion is not available to them when it plainly is.

RegulatorSelf exclusion detailWhat we found
GautengFull process publishedTerms, eligibility and a downloadable form
Northern CapeFull process publishedThe most detailed, including the document checklist
Western CapeSignposts itNo own process; links to the national programme
National Gambling BoardPage, no processA Self Exclusion Register page with no published detail
LimpopoPage, no processA self exclusion page carrying only a heading
Eastern CapeNothing publishedHelpline number only
MpumalangaNothing publishedNo mention under Social Responsibility
KwaZulu-NatalNothing publishedNo self exclusion content on the Authority site
Free StateNothing publishedNo self exclusion content on the Authority site

Two of nine publish a usable process. One signposts it. Six publish nothing at all, including the national body whose own Self Exclusion Register page carries no procedure. If you live in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape or Mpumalanga and went looking on your regulator’s website, you would reasonably have concluded there was nothing to apply for.

✅ Why the gaps do not actually block you

It is one national programme, not nine provincial ones. The Gauteng and Northern Cape descriptions match the national programme almost word for word, because they are describing the same thing. So a silent regulator website is a publishing failure, not a legal barrier. Phone 0800 006 008, or ask any licensed operator’s security department for the form, and the process is open to you regardless of which province you sit in.

🛠️ Other Tools Short of Full Exclusion

Self exclusion is the strongest option, and it is not the only one. If six months feels like more than you want to commit to right now, these are worth using, and using them does not preclude excluding later.

🛠️ Smaller steps that still work

  • Deposit limits: most licensed South African books let you set a daily, weekly or monthly cap in account settings. Increases usually take effect only after a delay; decreases apply immediately.
  • Account closure at one operator: a written request on responsible gambling grounds, which binds that brand immediately.
  • Bank level blocks: several South African banks let you block gambling merchant categories on a card through the app or by calling them.
  • Device level blocking software: installed on your phone and computer, ideally with the password held by somebody else.
  • Counselling on its own: the 0800 006 008 line offers free counselling whether or not you ever apply for an exclusion.

The honest limitation: every measure on this list can be undone by you, usually within a day. That is the difference the statutory route makes, and it is the reason to consider it if the smaller steps have not held.

☎️ Where to Get Help Right Now

You do not need to have made a decision before you make contact, and you do not need to be in crisis to be entitled to help. The counselling is free whether or not you ever apply for an exclusion.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for self exclusion in South Africa?

In terms of the legislation, anyone can apply. There is no diagnosis, referral or fee required, and you do not have to justify the request. Self exclusion is provided for under the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004 and administered through the National Responsible Gambling Programme and the provincial gambling boards.

How long does self exclusion last?

A minimum of six months. During that period an excluded person may not take part in any gambling activity. The order does not expire automatically at six months: it runs until an upliftment request is made and considered, so it continues indefinitely if you do nothing.

What do I need to provide to self exclude?

Your full name, a completed exclusion request form, a copy of your ID or passport, contact details including a telephone number, and a digital photograph. The photograph is what allows venue staff to recognise and refuse an excluded person. No medical report or financial information is required.

Where do I get the self exclusion form?

From any provincial gambling board, or from any gambling operator through its security department. You do not have to go through a regulator. The Gauteng Gambling Board also publishes a downloadable form on its website. A completed request can be submitted to the Board, to a licensee, or to a court.

Can I cancel my self exclusion early?

No. An upliftment request is only considered once the order has been in force for six months and you can prove you attended counselling sessions with a treatment professional. Both conditions must be met. That difficulty is deliberate: an exclusion you could reverse in a moment of pressure would not protect anyone.

My provincial gambling board publishes nothing about self exclusion. Can I still apply?

Yes. We checked all nine South African regulator websites on 28 July 2026 and only Gauteng and the Northern Cape publish a full process, with the Western Cape signposting the national one. It is a single national programme, so a silent regulator website is a publishing gap rather than a legal barrier. Call 0800 006 008 or ask any licensed operator for the form.
